As a Coach, Counselor, Practitioner, or Healer, you know that clients bring a myriad of issues to sessions – some they know going in, and some they discover while working with you.
They may even raise issues outside your area of expertise….
However, with the right tools, you can give them the clarity and support they need.
Concerns like disordered eating, weight gain, and poor body image affect over 75% of the population.
Whether known to you or not – chances are some of your clients suffer from food and body image disorders.
For as long as they experience this struggle, they face resistance on their path to self-fulfillment, healing, and happiness.
As a practitioner, you likely want to help – even if these issues are outside your comfort zone.
This is exactly why I have created the Food and Body Code® for Coaches and Counselors – a giant toolbox of practical user-friendly clinical assessment and coaching methods.

A Magic-Like Edge in Your Coaching Practice
A Magic-Like Edge in Your Coaching Practice
What if you had an extremely effective system of concrete steps to help your clients:
- Get unstuck from their disordered eating and weight-related behaviors, beliefs, and identity?
- Find their own unique ways to satisfy unmet needs and desires that replace current behaviors?
- Improve their results and stay motivated for the long-term?
- Improve their overall happiness in all areas of life.
What would it mean for you as a Coach or Practitioner to experience:
- Helping clients to set Well-Formed Outcomes to achieve the change they would like in a healthy, natural and holistic way (rather than a weight loss goal, because science proves that weight loss is not a proxy for health, nor is it a behavior).
- More ease and comfort in being able to help your clients have lasting transformation
What would it be like for you to see your clients:
- Experience rapport with themselves in their Present State and with their Future Self Desired State (without their eating and body issues or pursuit of endless weight-loss schemes)
- Quickly decode self-limiting thoughts and patterns in real-time to interrupt recurring habits
- Identify new ways of coping – in the moment – helping clients to survive without the behavior in that moment, and in future moments
- Self-discover—in REAL-TIME—behavior change strategies and self-care practices which are uniquely their own, lessening resistance and building trust
- Build self-acceptance, compassion, and hope – leading to increased motivation and belief in the intended outcome of having their dreams (not hooked onto a certain weight goal)

“After a year in the Behavior Decoding Training, I enjoy it more and more, and use the materials every day in my practice.
The course provides much more than just the decoding processes, which assist clients in gaining insight into their behaviors and discovering their own solutions! Barbara has taken information from numerous resources and compiled it into one comprehensive training, with research to back up the BDM™ she developed.
I love that the course incorporates her innovative approach to Intuitive Eating and HAES principles and provides directions on how to use this information with your clients. This is a huge plus for those who are not very familiar with these paradigms. Barbara continues to develop and update the course as needed.
Barbara has a calm, welcoming, and fun presence and is open to questions and suggestions, and encourages interaction and engagement. It makes you feel like you are part of a team. We [other members in the program] get together (virtually) and practice the decoding processes with each other - who knew how much it helps clinicians, too!
"I highly recommend this course, regardless of where you are in your career. I have been practicing for over two decades and the BDM™ tools have greatly improved my ability to assist clients in reaching their goals.”

Is it Really Possible to be Free of Food and Body Angst?
“I use the decoding process with all of my clients and find it extremely helpful. It allows my clients to clearly see the connection they have with food, exercise, and their bodies.
There is a great sense of relief when clients finally have insight into the question, “How am I doing this?”. When I hear clients say things like, ” … I realized that what I truly needed at that time was…” or when I see them pull a Symbolic Chi Chart out of their purse then I know that the Decoding Process is making a difference.
The behavior decoding charts are easy to follow and the information and webinars that Barbara provides are invaluable. Thank you Barbara Birsinger for these wonderful tools. I look forward to the next course and appreciate the opportunity to have continued access to the Decoding materials.”

“I have been having a lot of fun doing decoding with clients. I thought I would forward you this from the client I met with today (see below):
“Thanks, Karen. That was a cool session today. I’ve been to a lot of therapists and counselors, group therapy, AA therapy you name it. I think we hit on more relevant stuff than my last ten years of therapy combined!”
“WOW~ this is the feedback I have been getting from multiple clients with your method! So awesome! Thought I would share. Thanks again!”
“I’ve personally trained with the best and brightest in our field, including Anita Johnston, author of Eating in the Light of the Moon, Carolyn Costin author of numerous books on eating disorders and Evelyn Tribole author of Intuitive Eating, and Barbara Birsinger - I use her Behavior Decoding Method™ to uncover the symbolic meaning and purpose of food and body image issues that motivate clients to create lasting change.”

“I am not sure if you remember the interrogation that I put you through prior to purchasing your program. I was uneasy investing in another program that I felt would not teach me anything that I did not know after 25+ years of counseling.
Your program was different. Helping clients deconstruct their own food cravings, resistance to exercise or JABS [Jugements About Body], among many other topics, was fascinating for both of us [practitioner and client].
Each time I see my client’s body language and face as they provide me with their answers, I can see them unraveling years of confusion about their relationship with food or their body.
Using this tool has been one of the best strategies I have found yet. It is interactive and systematic which is very different than motivational interviewing or simple dialog. Please keep these innovative tools coming. I also have enjoyed Barbara'a accessibility. She is prompt in answering questions and making your students feel like we are good friends. Thanks again.”

Movement Blocks – (Lack of movement, physical activities or fitness)
Through decoding the activities resisted, clients learn that there is a very important,
yet buried message that is limiting body movement.
This discovery helps to release the block(s) – often shame-based – and to restore the client’s joyful and sustainable movement practices, care of the body and physical fitness.

Compulsive Over-Exercise
Through decoding the excessive activities, clients learn to identify the fears that are “running” about, such as not doing enough in life and at the same time over-doing, and how going to extremes calms their expectations.
These discoveries help them to find their own unique balance and harmony in
expectations, boundaries, and self-care, and returns them to moderate, safe activity.

Others’ Comments and Commentaries on Food and Body
“Deflect Not Inflict”
Through their inner reaction to a food and body comment, the client learns their inner landscape, and to expand their capacity or tolerance by using their voice creatively, with respectful and powerful “comebacks”.
This helps the client to avoid internalizing and being triggered, and contributes to their inner and outward empowerment.

Obsessive Body Checking
Compulsive weighing, measuring, mirror checks, pinching, sizing
Though decoding how one is measuring oneself - in addition to the thoughts, beliefs, and identity structures, clients learn how the diet culture "ideals" hijacked their self worth, and how they can now find their true inner voice of compassion, and inner guidance that becomes their new measuring method in life.

Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I am in another training now?
The good news is that this course is designed for your own pace and in your own time. More good news, it is designed to work synergistically with other coaching methods.
The best news? It is EASY, TAKE-AWAY, RIGHT-AWAY, with a step-by-step, easy-to-follow system – so you won’t get information overload.
How can I afford another training?
Cash-flow is important which is why you can get the training now on an affordable 3-4 payment plan over 3 months! After this Version 2.0 Course, the tuition for this course will significantly increase, as it is a Certification Course., with 33 Continuing Education Hours offer as well. NOW is the time to get in.
How much time will each module take to complete the training?
The Introductory Module 1 is the most robust, with a couple hours of content featuring 6 short videos – which you can watch on your own time. Once you finish Module 1, you can move on to any of the 7 Behavior Decoding Modules.
Each of the 7 Behavior Decoding Training Modules are only an hour of training, including the specific client video demonstration and step-by-step instructions. Some of the Modules have additional client videos (optional).
Each module has a Decoding Chart, ready for you to use right away with your clients, and you can start practicing the very next day!
What if I can’t participate in the Live Q+A + Consultation/Case Study Sessions?
The schedule and advance notice of the Live calls (on Zoom) will be provided at sign-up, which can allow time to arrange your schedule if possible. I will offer them at a few different days and times so that more people may be able to join. The presentation part of these Live Zoom events will be recorded and posted in the Membership site. These sessions are incredibly valuable to students in the course to get real-time practice in break-out groups, which are not recorded on Zoom.
If for whatever reason you still can’t make it, there will be plenty of opportunities for feedback and support. You can POST your questions and receive peer responses, as well as from me and my guest presenters:
- In the specific Decoding Behavior Module's Comments Section
- Case studies in the Forum under the topic: Case Studies – where I will review and reply.
- On the live sessions, I will address your questions and case studies even if you aren’t able to be on the call.
What if I am a Coach that is just starting to work with clients
on eating and weight issues without much experience?
You are in the right place! This is a must-have training that will set you up for better results right away. The program gives you a huge advantage.
For support, mentoring, and supervision, there are weekly Live Q+A Sessions and practice groups with me and my guest presenters. Help is also available in the Comments Section in each of the decoding Training Modules as well as the Forum.
You can practice the Decoding Process with others, like those in this course, your colleagues or friends until you are feeling confident to implement it with clients.
How do I know which clients are appropriate for the different Decoding Processes?
I cover this in the training for each process, but generally, this is related to the client’s ability to access and discuss feelings, needs, and assume responsibility in their work. Most people can do these processes. It is really up to your professional assessment of your client, and your level of rapport at that time.
Assessment Tools are provided to screen out clinical eating disorders or other mental or health conditions that might not be appropriate for the type of program or service.
7. Can this be used with groups?
Yes, I will cover this as a specific training topic in the Webinar, for both online and in -person groups.
There are separate handouts and charts for you to use with clients in groups.
It is important to use the process with individuals first, to learn the nuances of working with Decoding first, then branch out to using it with groups later.
Basically, the process is the same, but how you deliver it to a group is very different, and there are group dynamics to consider.
Many practitioners find it serves as a powerful discussion topic for weeks and many months to come. And clients love the groups, so referrals increase as well.
This method can be used with Closed Groups (set number of sessions with a start and finish, no new participants added)
It can aslo be used with Open Groups (on-going group with revolving participation: clients leave and new ones enter)
How does the Decoding Process help clients who don’t want to look at their behaviors?
It provides a new way of seeing things—because it is self-guided, it helps them find their own language, their own feelings, needs, and solutions, and therefore, they are less resistant to, and often don’t require outside suggestions on ways to transform their behaviors. Because it uses the current behaviors, it is not asking more of the client than where they are, or can access, in present time.
When and how do you introduce the Decoding Processes to clients?
This is part of the Training, and much of it also depends on your assessment of your client.
Initially, let clients know that there are many techniques that you may use in your work together, and some of them are called Decoding Process, which helps to find the positive intention and purpose for the client’s current behaviors. You may do one of these in a future session. There are some handout materials that can be given ahead of time so that the client can become more familiar with feelings, needs, etc.
In one of your sessions, there may be the behavior that the client is working on, and it might seem a perfect time to do a Decoding Process. There should be at least 45 minutes to start and complete or plan for the next session to do the Decoding Process. I will also show you how to do a shorter version and pick up the rest at the next session.
The Quick Decoding materials can be used during the week before the Decoding session to help clients prepare and get used to checking in with feelings and needs at the time of engaging (or thinking of engaging) in their behaviors.
How does the Decoding apply to people who are just really stuck on losing weight?
It helps them to find what is the underlying meaning in their quest for weight loss (it is never just about the weight). Once they discover this, it gives them a whole new perspective and helps them to get unstuck, so that they can move toward healthy behaviors, and at the same time begin to experience some of the things they've been putting on hold due to their weight.
Is this something that practitioners or coaches just starting out in a new practice can use easily?
This Training provides a “take-away” approach. As long as you are already a trained and experienced Coach, or Counselor, you can go practice using the processes right away following the easy framework provided.
Professional Peer Support is provided in the Training, through Live Q+A Webinar sessions, plus the Training Participant’s Private Membership Site for confidential case consultations and sharing experiences
How do participants in the Course interact with each other? (see above)
On the Live Consultation and Q+A Zoom sessions and in the Comments Section in each Module – which can also be used for confidential case consultations and sharing experiences – as well as the Secret-Private Facebook Group: The Food and Body Code™ for Coaches. Past members will be allowed to stay in the course and participate in future group calls for a new student cohort. This gives alumni more practice opportunities and provides new students opportunities to interact and get support from experienced grads.
Does this approach help clients connect to their body, and to trust their body and themselves?
Yes, by giving them a process to access feelings through the actual behaviors or representations of the behaviors, to uncover the emotions, both triggering and desired emotions through the behavior, as well as their deep, soulful needs, which reside – viscerally – in the body. Once they have the visceral experience of being able to trust their body now and in their Future Self, they make tremendous progress that they formally did not believe possible.
How does this process help our really stuck clients?
By being in rapport with their current behaviors (not just wanting them to stop what they are doing and take on new behaviors) but truly having compassion for the underlying meaning and purpose, and that there may be something even more precious to the client than we are aware of at the time. This gives the client permission, acceptance, and compassion for themselves, so they are better able to begin taking more responsibility for their journey. And there are Bonus Modules and group training on other aspects of the NLP Toolbox that improve client success!
Are the processes conducted differently for clients
who are in different stages in their transformation?
Not really, with the exception of severe food restriction, underweight, or severe overexercise—which should be referred out to mental health or medical professionals as these clients may not have the mental and emotional capacity at this extreme, and their focus may need to be in a higher level of care so that they can get medically stable to be able to process the information.
What about using these with Bariatric clients?
Yes, especially before the surgery; hopefully they can find what hasn’t been found or has not been offered to them before a surgical procedure that could help them get off the dieting-weight obsession and weight cycling (and a reason to postpone the surgery may be indefinite—so that they can see how an alternative CAN work) and also as a preventive measure to ensure no further weight gain.
Yes, after surgery to prevent relapse and failure of the procedure—as there is a high percentage— and usually, patients are not offered alternatives other than dieting, which has been part of the problem from the beginning, and can lead to malnutrition (already a risk with bariatric surgeries).
“Before, for me personally, I had some ideas about what was going on for me, but by doing the decoding with myself and also in practice sessions, has been invaluable and I have seen significant changes in my behaviours. With clients, it has been powerful! It is a complete structure that allows you to get to the heart/core of issues and map out with the clients having great input/control/empowerment into their own healing. I can also see there are many opportunities for further coaching as things become uncovered. I had a client who after only one session went on to make some substantial changes in her life and is much happier in herself and looking to unpack many of the things that came up in the session. Removing food cravings, changing behaviours, bringing more peace into their lives. Very powerful! Barbara has provided so much value in this course as well as her time and availability to assist, guide, mentor and facilitate the learnings. It has been an absolute pleasure.
